Sheffield reveal new stadium plans

Sheffield Eagles have revealed plans for a new 10,000-12,000 capacity stadium on the site of the current Don Valley Stadium.

The Eagles, who currently share games between Don Valley and Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane, are partnering up with Rotherham Titans rugby union club and the University Technical College.

Plans, which are currently at a feasibility stage, involve demolishing Don Valley Stadium, and levelling the land to create a 25 acre site between the new stadium and the English Institute of Sport.

It would also host other sports, such as basketball, snooker and boxing, and be ready for 2015/16 at an estimated cost of £40m.

Former sports and trade minister Richard Caborn has described the development of the Sports and Wellbeing Park as the “biggest Olympic legacy project outside of London”.

Other partners in the project include both Sheffield Universities, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, NHS Foundation Trust, the Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), the trust developing University Technical Colleges and Sport England.
