England boss Shaun Wane is confident George Williams can deliver against the Combined Nations All Stars despite his club form.

Williams’ club in Warrington are currently on a losing streak of five matches, having most recently lost to Wakefield at Belle Vue.

Daryl Powell’s side sit ninth in the league table, and have recorded just five wins in 15 so far in the 2022 Super League campaign.

Half-back Williams has scored four tries for Warrington in 2022, and has assisted only five more. That’s 19 behind assist leader Jake Connor, who has played his part in 24 tries so far, as well as scoring three himself.

Despite his club’s form, England boss Wane included Williams in his 20-man squad to face the All Stars this Saturday. He is joined by four other team-mates in the squad, including debutant Matty Ashton.

Shaun Wane confident in George Williams

“I know George as good as anybody; I know what he can do,” Wane said following the squad announcement.

“They’re doing it tough at the minute at Warrington. A coach has come in and changed things and it takes time. I understand that. But I know George can play, how he can play and what he can do.

“I’m very confident. I know people won’t like that, but in my heart, Paul Wellens and Andy Last, we’re all very confident he can deliver for us.”

Williams will be hoping a change of scenery may change his form and as he reunites with former Wigan coach Wane this week, and the England boss believes it could do the trick for the 27-year-old.

“Just a week of change in a different playing group, different coaching staff and different conditioners, all that can spark a player,” Wane added.

“I know how passionate George is and how much he wants to perform for Warrington. If we can help in a small way, that would be great.”
