Securing the League Leaders’ Shield an extra derby incentive for St Helens

St Helens can secure the Super League League Leaders’ Shield if they beat derby rivals Wigan at the Totally Wicked Stadium on Friday.

Only a minor miracle will stop Justin Holbrook’s side from finishing top of the table, but they can make it a certainty with victory.

Wigan, the only team that can mathematically catch them, will be desperate to stop them doing it this weekend, while also wanting to preserve their own second place with Castleford only three points behind them.

Saints forward Morgan Knowles told the club’s official website: “Winning the Shield will definitely be an incentive, but it will be for both teams,.

“Wigan will want to stop us from getting it and we’ll want to get it against them, so it does add a bit extra. It’s first vs. second, Saints vs. Wigan – it doesn’t get much bigger than that.”

St Helens, who currently sit eight points clear of the Warriors, have won the two previous meetings between the sides this season.
