Sean Long comes out of retirement

Sean Long has come out of retirement to sign for Salford City Reds.

Long, 35, is assistant coach at the City of Salford Stadium, but will now be available to make a return to the field should boss Phil Veivers need him.

It means the former St Helens and Great Britain scrum half could play against one of his former clubs, Widnes, when the Vikings visit Salford on Friday night.

Salford lost scrum-half Matty Smith, who was out of contract at the end of the season, to Wigan earlier this month, leaving them short in the halves.

Long tweeted: “Just so it’s out there. I’ve signed for Salford and will be called upon when needed.”

Long won four Super League titles during an illustrious career with St Helens, before moving to Hull where he spent an injury-hit two years.
