Former Great Britain captain Garry Schofield OBE has been appointed as South Africa Rugby League’s Technical Director.

Schofield will travel out to South Africa this weekend in his new role which will involve supporting, developing and mentoring the South African coaching staff in order to leave a strong legacy.

Garry Schofield said: “I’m absolutely delighted to be back involved in the game and I am delighted to be working with South Africa who I believe are the real sleeping giants of Rugby League.

“From what I have seen they have the power, pace and skills to be successful and just need some specific Rugby League nous and guidance on how to play the game.

“With my experience of International Rugby League I am in a great position to help with this, my ambition is for South Africa to qualify for the 2013 World Cup and I can’t wait to get started.”

South Africa will play the Great Britain Community Lions later this month as they build towards the qualifiers for the 2013 Rugby League World Cup which takes place in the UK
