Schofield hands trial to duo

Barrow have confirmed that experienced forward Lee Doran and local amateur Adam Nicholson are training with the club.

Doran’s previous clubs include Widnes and Leigh. He also represented Ireland at the 2008 Rugby League World Cup.

The 29-year-old was surprisingly released by the Vikings at the end of last season, despite collecting the club’s supporters player of the year and being named in the Co-operative Championship dream team.

Barrow chairman Des Johnston said: “Lee is out of contract at the present time and has come along to train and put himself in the shop window.

“He has a proven track record. Schoey will decide whether he would be a useful addition to the squad but I’ll decide whether or not we can do the maths on a deal which makes him affordable.”

Raiders head coach Garry Schofield is also taking a closer look at Nicholson, a centre who currently plays for Walney Central.

“I have heard a lot of good things about Adam and I know he is very highly rated in the amateur game,” he said.

“Unless we give local players like him a chance to show what they have to offer then we will never know what talent there is in the area. I’ll be taking a long hard look at him and make no mistake about it, if he deserves a chance he’ll get one.”

The duo trained with the Raiders squad tonight and Doran is likely to feature in the pre-season friendly against Wigan this weekend.
