Have your say: Will anyone gain promotion to Super League this season?

At the minute, the Qualifiers structure still stands, so we want to know if you think any team will come up to Super League from the Championship this season.

Leigh Centurions lost to Catalans Dragons in the Million Pound Game last year, which relegated them to the Championship after only earning promotion to the top-flight a year before.

Hull Kingston Rovers were relegated in 2016 but replaced Leigh last season after finishing in third position in the Qualifiers.

There is no doubt that bringing promotion and relegation back to Rugby League has made it more exciting for the fans if nothing else.

And this year, the Betfred Championship looks to be as competitive as ever before, with there being a number of clubs competing for a top-four finish after the regular campaign.

Leigh are the favourites to win the Championship League Leaders’ Shield and get promoted to Super League, despite suffering a 34-12 defeat to title rivals Toronto Wolfpack in the opening round. The Centurions have got a brilliant coach in Neil Jukes and he has put together a solid squad for this season.

Toronto have spent a lot of money in the off-season as they aim to get promoted to Super League this year, and in the second half against Leigh last weekend, they were certainly playing like a Super League outfit.

Toulouse Olympique only just missed out on a place in the Qualifiers last year but they are expected to get there in 2018. They have got a fantastic squad and under Sylvain Houles, they could be a force to be reckoned with.

Featherstone Rovers are on the verge of becoming a full-time team and you wouldn’t be surprised if they finish in the top four either. They pulled off a couple of big coups in Martyn Ridyard and Gareth Hock as well as others.

You can never write off Halifax. They are only a part-time club but Richard Marshall is one of the most underrated coaches in British Rugby League. They made the Qualifiers last year and will be in and around that spot this time around.

We haven’t even mentioned London Broncos yet! They have been terrific in recent years and have started to blood through some of their youngsters which is great to see. It would good to see a side from the Capital back in the top-flight.

Dewsbury Rams and Batley Bulldogs are certainly darkhorses to get into the top four places. It will be difficult for them but stranger things have happened.

So, do you think a Championship club could gain promotion to Super League this year? If so, who?

  1. Toronto baring any major injuries, we have the money to stock up before the qualifiers if necessary and plenty of people willing to come play for us.

Leigh i think will make it, they still have to gel and they haven’t played Baptise yet.

Might have a 3rd go though if the SL teams come up vs TWP and Leigh first and get banged up.

  2. Toronto I assume will not be under salary cap like rest of championship so will probably cheat there way up and just spend what they want assume Toulouse will be the same is this fair ? No

    • I would be very interested in seeing your sources for this information. Just making crap up to make yourself feel better doesn’t make it reality.

  3. Where do you get the idea from that Jukes is a brilliant coach. Since Greg Worthington left Leighs right hand side is very poor and picked by him. A good coach would have kept Ridyard and not Reynolds

  4. Leigh have a huge problem and it is Jukes. He got promoted on a good squad he inherited. He dismantled a squad and created a new squad full of journeymen for Superleague and failed badly. He has dismantled again and has more money than any other team in this league yet he is still battered on the opening day. Replace Jukes and they have an outside chance of Superleague. Toronto are very fortunate they had disciplinary problems as 3 journeymen on waht must have been big wages have left and a good promising lad come in as a replacement. Fev won’t have enough to make Superleague though it would be amazing if they made it. Toulouse ooooh interesting. They have an outside chance but like Fev probably not enough. No other team has a chance of Superleague this time around but it would be nice for any of them to have a shot at the top4 a’la Batley style.
