Catalans Dragons’ England full-back Sam Tomkins will remain with the French Super League club in 2022 after activating a one-year extension in his contract.

The 32-year-old former Wigan favourite, who initially joined the Dragons on a three-year deal with an option of a fourth season ahead of the 2019 campaign, will remain at the Gilbert Brutus Stadium at least until the end of 2022.

Tomkins, who has scored 18 tries in 51 games for the Catalans, is currently leading Super League’s Steve Prescott Man of Steel leaderboard after an impressive first half to the season.

Dragons coach Steve McNamara said: “Sam has completely embraced the culture of the club since his arrival.

“He is in exceptional shape and is a true leader. It was a very easy decision to extend his contract and it is a strong sign for our club to retain the current England team captain.”

Tomkins, who has expressed a wish to end his career in the south of France, said: “I am very happy to extend my contract with the Dragons.

“It was a very easy decision to make. It’s a club that my family and I have grown to love since we arrived here two-and-a-half years ago.

“I think the club is on the right track and I want to be a part of it for as long as possible.”
