Catalans season a failure if we don’t make Grand Final, says Sam Tomkins

Catalans Dragons will have failed this season unless they walk out at Old Trafford for the Super League Grand Final, according to Sam Tomkins.

Tomkins, one of their most experienced players, believes the team can respond from their recent wobble to hit top form when it matters most.

“We couldn’t class it as a successful season unless we are playing at Old Trafford,” Tomkins told this week’s Love Rugby League Podcast.

“That is what everybody sets out to do and not every team is capable of doing it. We are one of the few teams who have got everything in place to be able to do it, from the owner, to the staff, to the stadium, to the players, to the training regime – we’ve got it all.

“There are no excuses and not every team has that. You can’t see it as a successful year unless you are winning a Grand Final, getting to a Grand Final is not worth anything really.”

Sam Tomkins: We’ve got a lot more to give yet

Tomkins admits St Helens remain the best team in the competition, but believes Wigan and the Dragons are both capable of upsetting the champions.

“Wigan have proved that on the day they can be brilliant,” he said. “Saints have been Saints as they have for the last few years. They are the best team in the comp.

“We haven’t had a great season but we are still sitting in third which for us is a positive. It sounds cliché but we have a lot more to give yet, we are not hitting where we need to be.

“The fact that we are learning lessons and we are still sitting in third is a good thing for us. I’m confident that we have got a purple patch coming and hopefully it’s the right time of the year. That is what you have to be doing – playing your best rugby at the end of the year. As the league table starts to settle down in the next few weeks, that is when you have to be playing your best rugby.”
