Salford take young duo on trial

Salford have handed one-month trials to Calvin Wellington and Connor Davies-Aspey.

Welshman Wellington came through the academy at St Helens, where he made one first-team appearance before joining Welsh rugby union side Dragons, who play in the Pro14 competition. The 23-year-old is a centre who can play on the wing.

Davies-Aspey, 16, currently plays for Salford’s foundation side, where he has caught the eye of coach Ian Watson. The duo are expected to play against Swinton Lions in a pre-season friendly on Saturday.

On the young pair, Watson commented: “Calvin Wellington came through the system at St Helens.

“He has recently been playing rugby union and he has come in on a month’s trial. He has got a very good background, so we will see how he goes against Swinton this weekend.

“Connor is from our foundation team and is 16-years-old. It is a big plus for the foundation that he has come in to train with us, and he has done really well. We have given him a one-month trial and we might give him an appearance this weekend against Swinton.”
