Salford Red Devils duo Dan Sarginson and James Greenwood will play no further part in the 2022 season, confirmed coach Paul Rowley.

England international centre Sarginson will miss the rest of the Super League season as well as the World Cup with a shoulder injury.

Forward James Greenwood is also out for the entire campaign with an ankle injury. His back-row partner Shane Wright will only be back for the last month of the season.

Speaking after their 30-24 defeat at Wakefield on Sunday, Rowley said: “They’re pretty big misses.

“Dan will need an operation on his shoulder. We might get Shane Wright for three or four games at the end of the season.

“We’ll crack on with what we’ve got. But losing three players in a squad, which sounds pretty severe, is not actually a bad number in most squads but to us it’s quite damaging.”

Salford boss on defeat at Wakefield

The Red Devils left it too late in their comeback on Sunday afternoon. They were 24-4 down at half-time and fought back in the second half but they left themselves with too much to do.

It was Salford’s fifth defeat of the season in all competitions.

On his side’s performance at Belle Vue, Rowley said: “We dipped our toe in the water, which you can’t do at this level.

“As is quite frequent, we’ve got a team that tries really, really hard, but lack a little bit of resilience defensively and that comes down to a little bit of quality at times.

“It’s a choice to work hard and do tough actions, and defence in particular. We were really good with the ball, when we built pressure and our execution was pretty good.

“To get five tries away was pretty good, you should be winning. So it was purely defence.”
