Rugby League Weekender: Record crowds, registration plates, Denver Test

Drew Darbyshire

We look at all the best bits from the weekend’s action.

The good

It was a cracker of a game on Friday night, with Castleford Tigers beating Leeds Rhinos 25-24 at Elland Road. It was brilliant to see Leeds break their own Super League attendance record.

There was very nearly an upset in the Championship. Rochdale Hornets put up a phenomenal fight against Toronto Wolfpack, but the Canadian side clinched an 18-17 victory at the Crown Oil Arena. It was also our live match.

The bad

Halifax have had a week to forget. They were knocked out of the Challenge Cup by League 1 opposition Oldham and were battered 38-6 at Toulouse.

A car blocking a drive in Widnes…

The ugly

Huddersfield lost heavily at Wigan on Friday night and it was their worst performance of the season yet. They have won just two out of their first seven games of the season and sit rock bottom. The Giants need wins and fast.

The Denver mid-year Test is in tatters… Will it still go ahead?

Result of the week

There weren’t many upsets this weekend but what a result it was for Castleford. Leeds were favourites for the game at Elland Road but the Tigers grabbed the two points. Notable mentions must go to Rochdale and Pilkington Recs, who came close to beating Toronto and Coventry respectively.
