The RFL is urging Rugby League fans across the country to rally to the assistance of Wigan-based community club Ashton Bears after they were left with a £100,000 bill to repair fire damage to their clubhouse.

The fire occurred in the early hours of February 9 and caused major damage to the lounge room, storage rooms and kitchen of the clubhouse, which serves the club’s 250 registered open age and junior players.

“This is a terrible shame and a major setback for Ashton Bears who such a sterling job in their local community,” said RFL Director of Participation and Strategic Partnerships David Gent.

“The RFL is providing practical assistance to Ashton Bears and I know that the club has already had lots of offers of support from around the game.

“It is at times like these that the whole Rugby League family comes together and I would urge everyone involved in the game to do what they can to help Ashton Bears in their hour of need.”
