Rochdale have signed hooker Stuart Howarth from Whitehaven for the 2019 season.

The 28-year-old has played over 120 Super League games for Wakefield Trinity, Salford Red Devils, St Helens and Hull FC as well as enjoying spells at Workington Town and Whitehaven.

Howarth, who came through the Wigan Warriors academy, is a hooker by trade but can also cover at loose forward as well as in the halves.

On linking up with the Hornets, Howarth said: “I’m really pleased to be joining Rochdale.

“It was an easy decision, and I already know a few of the lads.

“From speaking with Foz (Carl Forster), he made it pretty straight forward. He’s a great coach, and easy to play with. He combines the role of player-coach really well.

“I’m made up he asked me to come to the club along with Tony Stewart. I can’t wait to get started.”

Forster commented: “Stu is a real quality signing for us, he brings a lot of experience and great leadership.

“This is a real statement from the club to secure a player of his calibre. He is great to work with and I’m looking forward to seeing him in a Hornets’ shirt.”
