Rochdale have confirmed the signing of hooker Connor Aspey on loan from Super League side Salford for the 2022 League 1 season.

The 19-year-old made his Super League debut in 2020 against Hull Kingston Rovers. He has also featured for Newcastle Thunder and North Wales Crusaders on loan. He also spent time with Championship outfit Widnes on loan in 2021.

“I’m really looking forward to getting stuck in with the team,” he said.

“I am excited to get some regular game time and hopefully help the club achieve their goals.”

On the latest addition, head coach Matt Calland said: “I have watched Connor Aspey play over the last couple of years. Connor has played against Hopwood Hall for Salford and he was always their best player.

“The youngster is very dangerous from dummy-half. He is a running nine which will suit our style of play. It’s a real coup for the club to get Connor for the season on loan.”

Chairman Andy Mazey thanks contacts for latest addition

On the deal, club chairman Andy Mazey added: “Paul Rowley was a guest of mine at our Barrow fixture earlier this year. He spoke highly of Connor and recommended we keep an eye on the situation as they may allow him to go out to get game time in 2022.

“Paul rates Connor and he knows a thing or two about a good nine being an international in that position himself.

“When I mentioned him to Matt, he was very keen to try and bring him on board. I’m therefore delighted to have secured Connor’s services for 2022 season.

“I’d like to thank Connor’s agent Keiron Brown and my colleague and friend over at Salford Ian Blease. I’m sure our fans will be excited to see a talented young Super League prospect in our shirt in 2022.”
