Super League chief Robert Elstone has praised runaway table toppers St Helens as they were presented with the League Leaders’ Shield.

Saints moved 18 points clear at the top of the Super League table with a hard fought win over Castleford on Friday night.

After the game, they lifted the League Leaders’ Shield for the second successive year.

Elstone said: “Saints have dominated the season so far.

“Playing to exceptionally high standards week-in, week-out, they are deserved winners of the League Leaders’ Shield.

“The rugby they have played under head coach Justin Holbrook has thrilled and entertained, and represents the best Super League has to offer.

“Credit must also go to chairman Eamonn McManus and his team who have assembled such an impressive squad and support team over the past few seasons.

“The club continues to produce so many outstanding young local players who are all contributing so much to Super League.

“Of course, there is so much still to be played for this season, and Saints will know more than most that the biggest tests still await as they enter the play-offs.”
