RFL to investigate allegations of homophobic comments towards player

The RFL are investigating allegations that homophobic language was used towards Warrington player Rob Butler in a recent game.

Butler, 23, reported an incident to the referee during Warrington reserves’ game against Huddersfield.

The identity of the player involved is unknown and the RFL’s Match Review Panel has referred it for further investigation.

The Match Review Panel noted: “At a stoppage, Warrington’s Rob Butler made an accusation that a Huddersfield Giants player used homophobic language towards him.

“Butler did not specify who it was or what words had been used however wanted to make an allegation. I did not hear any homophobic language used so placed the incident on report.

“Butler made a late tackle on a player; it was at this penalty that Butler states homophobic language was used.”

Huddersfield won the game 22-18 at Victoria Park.

Incidents in reserves matches are reviewed alongside those in the Championship and Challenge Cup.

Other bans handed out

Two players have been handed bans following the first round of reserves matches.

Castleford’s Ben Wood has been given a one-match ban following a late hit on the passer in their game with Newcastle.

He was sinbinned for the incident in the first half of the match.

Huddersfield’s Ben Dean has also been banned for one-match for a dangerous throw against Warrington, which also resulted in him being sent to the sinbin.

Meanwhile, Workington’s Caine Barnes was handed a three-match ban for two separate incidents in their cup win over Dewsbury.

Barrow’s Brad Crellin has been banned for two matches for a crusher tackle against Rochdale.

Zak Baker of Rochdale will miss the start of the new League 1 season after he received a two-match ban for a late hit on the passer in the same game.
