RFL clarify Dobson situation

The RFL have confirmed that Hull KR can re-register Michael Dobson later in the season after the scrum half’s contract was terminated this week.

Dobson, 24, is currently out injured and his contract was terminated to enable new signing Willie Mason to fly over and take over his quota place.

With Mason expecting a Tongan passport, and thus taking him off the overseas quota, any time soon, Rovers then plan on re-registering Dobson, once back fit, so he can play in their team.

An RFL statement read: “Hull KR have sought dispensation to be able to re-register Dobson later in the season, it has been indicated to them that it will be granted, subject to the usual regulations being met at the time.

“A number of operational rules allow for dispensation to be granted whilst others are absolute and non-discretionary. With the rules, where dispensation may be applied, each case is judged on its own merits.

“The rule is in place to prevent clubs from stockpiling overseas players and developing a carousel of player changes to their squads throughout a season.”
