RFL Chairman Brian Barwick has paid tribute to fans of rugby league, following the response to the tragic death of Danny Jones.

The RFL board of directors met on Friday, and discussed the way that the sport had shown such collective solicitude in the wake of the tragedy.

“I have been involved in rugby league now for the past three years and during that time have often been impressed, and indeed moved, by how the sport and its followers look out for each other, especially in times of need,” said Barwick.

“This week that special kindness and concern has been seen in abundance as the sport has put a collective arm around the family and friends of Danny Jones, who died so tragically last Sunday.

“Over the coming weekend, the whole rugby league community will show their respect at games the length and breadth of the country and add to the incredible sums that have already been raised throughout the sport to help his wife Lizzie and her family.

“My high regard for the sport of Rugby League is only surpassed by my respect for those who follow it with such a genuine generosity of spirit.

“Our thoughts go out to Lizzie and her family and friends at this difficult time.”
