Red Star Belgrade have confirmed they are not making a bid to enter League 1 ahead of the 2021 season.

The Serbian club have previously explored an interest in joining the Rugby Football League pyramid and have even competed in the Challenge Cup in recent years.

But Red Star will not be making an application to join League 1 alongside Ottawa Aces in 2021 – but instead, they are looking at the possibility of forming a European club competition.

A club statement read: “An article was today released stating we will “abandon” our League 1 vision.

“We confirm in this present situation, we are not bidding for inclusion in 2021.

“We have, however, not confirmed we are abandoning a potential future anywhere after that date.

“Given our CEO is on the working group for the viability of a European club competition, it is vital we review all options now prior to proceeding in any one direction.”
