Chad Randall will captain Harlequins in the absence of the injured Rob Purdham, starting with Friday’s ETF Securities Capital Challenge against London Skolars.

Randall who is entering his fifth season with Harlequins has said he cannot wait to lead out the team for the start of the new season.

“It is a great honour to be awarded the captaincy and I’m looking forward to leading the boys in Purdham’s absence.

“I’ve been with this group of players for several years now and have played a lot of game-time for Quins which will all definitely help.”

Randall has played a pivotal role in the Harlequins squad since his arrival from Manly Sea Eagles in 2006.

Last season he made his 150th consecutive appearance for the club, a remarkable feat for a hooker and testament to his absolute determination on and off the field.

Harlequins head coach Brian McDermott praised Chad’s leadership skills: “Chad Randall has been a massive leader for us over the past few years. His on-the-field leadership and demeanour won’t need to change much, it’s just he’ll be wearing the captain’s armband for now.”

Randall’s first game as captain will be against London Skolars this Friday at the HAC Artillery Ground in Central London (1.45pm KO). The match is Harlequins only preseason match and is therefore absolutely vital in the squads preparation for 2010.

“This will be a very important match for us and our only opportunity to put the finishing touches to our preseason training in a competitive situation.” Randall said.

“I love playing at the HAC, there’s always a great atmosphere and it’s really good to be able to take the game into central London.”

Rob Purdham underwent surgery on a torn shoulder ligament last week and is expected to be out for approximately 12 weeks.
