Quins Land Young British Trio

Harlequins Rugby League Head Coach Brian McDermott is excited to add three promising young British players to his squad for the 2007 season.

Moving to the capital to join Quins RL is Wigan utility Chris Melling – who today celebrates his 22nd birthday – and forwards Jon Grayshon (Huddersfield) and David Tootill (Leeds).

According to Coach Brian McDermott, it's a chance for all three to test themselves outside their comfort zone: "It's a big decision for a young player but these three are willing to buck the trend away from the comforts of home and back their own ability."

Melling is a former Wigan senior Academy captain who was called on to make the step up this season at the JJB. While he played mostly as an outside back in his first team appearances, he will be used primarily as a hooker at Quins.

McDermott added: "He is a very well educated player and I like that he's got a good attitude to learning. As well as being back-up for Chad (Randall) he will add some good experience to our youth set-up and give us good strength in depth."

Melling added: "It's an exciting opportunity for me and my girlfriend and a great new challenge. I'm out to achieve a lot more first team experience and that has a lot to do with the move."

Jon Grayshon and Dave Tootill will also give McDermott's pack a significant boost: "They will both add to what I think is already a formidable pack of forwards we have here at Quins."

"Jon is a big, athletic, line-breaker and with him we're looking at our long term squad building. They have both left good clubs to join another very good club."

Tootill was a member of the Brian McDermott coached Leeds under eighteen academy team and that was a factor in his decision: "It's a massive opportunity for me to step up to a higher standard," said the 20yr old. "Knowing Brian well obviously made the decision easier and I look forward to working with him again."
