Lebanon Rugby League has appointed Engage Super League assistant coach Rob Powell as interim national supremo for this autumn’s programme of internationals.

The highly rated Harlequins RL second-in-command, who amassed a wealth of experience in developing young players at South London Storm before moving up to ‘Quins RL in 2007, will take charge for the games against Italy, in September, and in the inaugural MENA Championship, against Pakistan XIII in Lebanon, the following month.

“I’m really excited about getting involved with the Lebanese rugby league,” Powell said. “It is sure to be a good experience and I’m particularly looking forward to working with a group of players who seem to have quality and are very passionate about the sport.”

Powell, who will finish his affairs with the top flight London outfit before heading to Beirut in mid-September, will liaise closely with Lebanon coach Johnny Elias, who will be in charge for the nation’s World Cup qualifiers in 2011.

“Johnny and I have talked about how we want the team to play, its structure and style, and I’m excited about putting it into practice in the games,” Powell added. “I want to prepare the players so they can perform to the best of their abilities. I’m not even thinking about winning or losing but if they are prepared well, we’ll go in with every chance of doing well.”

LRLF Chief Operating Officer Remond Safi commented, “The LRLF is proud to have coaches from opposite ends of the rugby league world planning the Cedars’ campaign. We very much look forward to welcoming Rob next month.”
