Plans for a new 8,000 capacity stadium to host Workington’s rugby league and football teams have been revealed.

Allerdale Borough Council are looking to develop on the site of Borough Park, the current home of the football club Workington Reds.

Anticipated to be completed by 2021, the estimated cost is £15m.

The pitch will be laid using the latest synthetic and real grass technology.

Also on the site will be a separate full-size synthetic pitch for community use.

Workington Town’s Barry Scholey told the News & Star: “The concept designs look fantastic and set the bar for the ambition we have for the facilities we want for our players, our supporters and the local community.

“Of course there is a lot more work to do but we’ve worked well as a team on this so far.”

The plans are expected to be submitted for approval this winter.
