Phil Clarke comments gave Salford added motivation, says Ian Watson

Ian Watson says Phil Clarke’s recent comments about Salford gave his side extra motivation to reach the Super League Grand Final.

The Red Devils will meet St Helens in the Super League Grand Final at Old Trafford next Saturday after winning 28-4 at Wigan in the semi-final.

Speaking on Sky Sports two weeks ago, pundit Clarke said: “Half of their squad, when you look at their team last week, probably wouldn’t get a contract at another Super League club.

“They’re Championship players on paper. Somehow they’ve managed to get fantastic performances and a brilliant season out of them.”

But the Red Devils have proved Clarke wrong, with them reaching the Grand Final for the first time in the club’s history.

When asked if he had anything to say to Clarke, Watson replied: “I think the players have answered him.

“I didn’t actually see what he said at the time, but I got told this morning.

“I think the players have answered him but it gave us a bit of extra motivation so I can’t grumble.”
