Payne Haas is back for the Broncos

Brisbane Broncos star Payne Haas admitted to being “rattled” after a large Suncorp crowd booed him during Friday night’s 35-24 win over the Gold Coast Titans.

Haas put in a committed performance but it made little difference to the Broncos faithful. The prop forward was booed throughout the game as the fans made their feelings known. They were of course reacting to the player’s request to leave due to a contract stand-off with the Broncos.

Payne Haas rattled by fans reaction

It was something of a surprise to see the Broncos fans turn on one of their own. And Haas admits it got to him.

“I’m usually not one to get rattled, but when I heard the boos coming out tonight (and) when I got onto the ball it rattled me a bit,” Haas told channel 9 after the game. “But I had to compose myself and just stay in the game and do my job for the team.”

Credit to him though it did not effect his game against the Gold Coast. He put in a committed performance with 128 run metres, five line breaks and 26 tackles.

The 22-year-old is under contract until the end of 2024. It is said to be worth $800,000 a year. However he would be able pick $1million if he was to sign a deal today. Hence the request for an upgrade that the Broncos have rejected.

Speaking after the win coach Kevin Walters again insisted Haas will not be released. Neither will he put the player in reserve grade.

Walters keen to keep hold

Instead he hopes everyone can sit down around a table and find a solution. But the coach is clear, he wants to keep Haas on board.

“I’m really confident we can sit down with Payne’s management and sort something out,” Walters told reporters. “We’re not going to release him. He’s been a big part of our club for a few years now and will be a big part, I believe, into the future.

“He has been a wonderful player for us and he is the best prop in the game so we don’t want to lose the best prop in the game. It has happened in the last 24-48 hours so we will sit down with Payne and his management and have a good discussion.

“We want to sit down with his management team and sort something out. That is what we will have to get to in the next couple of weeks.

“He showed his commitment tonight to playing for this club and whilst he has got a Broncos jersey on he will continue to do that.”
