Salford coach Paul Rowley cut a very proud figure after his side strengthened their position in the Super League play-off places with a win over Catalans.

It’s no secret the Red Devils have one of the lowest budgets in Super League but after 10 rounds of action, Rowley’s side sit fifth in the table having enjoyed an impressive start to the season.

Salford have won six of their first 10 matches as well as having to handle a couple of big injuries to key players.

Speaking after their 16-14 win over Catalans on Sunday, Rowley praised his side for continuing to build on reaching the play-off semi-finals last season, where they just fell short to champions St Helens.

“We have no right to be where we are on our resource, I don’t care what anyone says,” Rowley said. “I’m so proud of this group of players.

“This game was a statement that this side can win games in a different manner. You can win a game like this and it’s described as an ugly win, but it was a tough win this, full of grit and determination from the boys.

“Tough wins are a good point for us going forward for the remainder of the season. For this team to be sat where we are is remarkable 10 games in.”

Paul Rowley praises Salford spirit

Salford were 14-4 ahead at the break thanks to first half tries from King Vuniyayawa and Joe Burgess as well as a couple of goals from Marc Sneyd.

Catalans fought back in the second half, with tries from Paul Seguier and Adam Keighran reducing Salford’s lead to two points with seconds left on the clock. However, Keighran couldn’t convert his try at the death, meaning Salford hung on for the 16-14 win at the AJ Bell Stadium.

“There was plenty of spirit and character but the first half was a real high-quality effort, we showed total control and we looked like a good team in the midst of a good battle,” Rowley added.

“We were coming out on top in the first half but Catalans regrouped in the second half and we had to be a little bit different and show a lot of resilience against their onslaught. We deserved the win though.”

Salford are just fourth points behind league leaders Wigan in the table and are two points above Saints.

Next up for the Red Devils is a trip to Leeds on Friday, May 5, with the international test between England and France taking place in Warrington next Saturday.
