Huddersfield coach Ian Watson has confirmed that sought-after forward Owen Trout has been ruled out of Friday’s game against Leigh.

The 23-year-old suffered a knee injury in last week’s 28-0 defeat at Hull KR, which rules him out of this week’s clash with Leigh.

“Owen Trout hurt his knee last week in the game,” Watson said.

“He was fine (then) but it has flared up this week so we’re going to send him for an MRI scan to double check it, so he’s unavailable this week.”

Meanwhile, prop Matty English comes back in to Watson’s side, making his 100th Huddersfield appearance against Leigh.

The England Knights international is out of contract at the end of the season and has been linked with moves to Castleford and Hull FC.

However, Yorkshire Live reported earlier this week that Leigh have won the race to sign Trout, who the Giants reportedly wanted to keep.

When asked about the latest on Trout’s future on in his press conference on Thursday, Watson replied: “Nothing from us. I think there are quite a few clubs in for him.

“Like we’ve said before, he’s been getting offers from a few places so he’ll have to make his decision on what he thinks is best for his career on the back end of that.

“It’s hard to look in a different direction when people are throwing contracts at you and them being very attractive.

“There aren’t loads of middles knocking around who are young and British, so you can see if people have got more space in their salary cap than we have or another club, then that’s how they’ll potentially get him in on the back end of that.

“With it being a salary cap makes it really intriguing and difficult at times as well because you want to keep certain players within your squad, but you know that you can’t keep everybody as well because you can’t pay everybody what they think they’re worth or what they are worth at that time. You’ve got to balance out what’s right for you, for them and for the club.”

Trout has made more than 50 appearances for Huddersfield since arriving from Leeds in 2020.

Huddersfield welcome Leigh to the John Smith’s Stadium in Round 12 of Super League on Friday night, 7:45pm kick-off.
