Young back rower Owen Smith has inked a deal at St Helens, after impressing while on trial at the club.

Smith has agreed an 18-month contract, which lasts until the end of his eligibility for the club’s Under-19s academy.

“Owen comes in from Halton Hornets U18s,” St Helens academy head coach Derek Traynor told Saints’ official website.

“We have been keeping an eye on him for a while and he impressed on trial.

“He chose us over other Super League clubs in the area and has done enough to make us think he can go on and hopefully become a Super League player at the Saints.

“He has played for the 19s, and the reserves, and has shown he is capable of handling himself at both levels.”
