Orr doesn’t blame Chase for loss

Castleford coach Danny Orr refused to pin the blame on Rangi Chase after the interception try that led to the Tigers going down 34-30 to Salford.

Orr’s side were leading 30-28 with nine minutes to play, when Chase’s long pass was intercepted by Ryan McGoldrick, who ran 50 metres to score the decisive try against his former club.

Orr told the club’s official website: “Although you see McGoldrick scoring the winning try from Chase’s pass, it (the defeat) came way before that.

“Rangi is a world class player – you’ve seen the things that he has done tonight with the ball and you can only admire that.

“I’m not going to tell him ‘stop doing that’ because that’s Rangi and that’s the quality that he brings to the team.

“He knows in himself that that pass probably wasn’t on but on another day it might be, and if it does go to our hands and we go up the other end and score we’ll say: ‘what another brilliant pass from Rangi’.

“Although we were winning at that stage, I think that the loss came way before that – we just didn’t perform, we got outmuscled by them, we were not good in defence, our go-forward was poor, our kicking game in the first half was terrible – all those things added up to a poor performance and a game that we didn’t deserve to win.”

It meant back-to-back defeats for the Tigers, who went down to Leeds in the Challenge Cup last week.

The defeat leaves them stranded at the bottom of the Super League table, two points adrift of Salford and London.
