The Manly Sea Eagles today named star halfback Matt Orford as the club's new captain for the 2007 NRL Premiership.

Orford fills the biggest boots in the game by replacing retired skipper Ben Kennedy.Manly coach Des Hasler announced Orford as the club's new captain at an orientation presentation today at the club's training headquarters at the Sydney Academy of Sport at Narrabeen.

All members of the club's NRL training squad were at the presentation.Hasler said he was certain Orford was the man to replace Kennedy. "He's a thinker, a good citizen, a leader and he has the respect of his team mates – he will do a difficult job well," Hasler said.

Orford was surprised by his selection. "I hadn't given it much thought but to follow an inspirational captain like Ben Kennedy into the role at such a great club is an honour.

"I'm humbled really but I accept the role with open arms and a captain is only as good as the team he leads. I have plenty of experience and back up all over the field and I will be looking for the support of proven players like Steve Menzies, Brent Kite, Steve Bell, Jamie Lyon and others" Orford said.

Manly CEO Grant Mayer said Orford's reputation on and off the field earned him the position."It's a coach's call but Matt will have the support of the entire organization and I am sure the fans will welcome the appointment" Mr Mayer said.
