Oldham prop sent off for “asking the ref how much he was getting paid”

Oldham prop Ben Davies was sent off for making a comment that questioned the integrity of a match official at the weekend.

The Roughyeds pushed Bradford all the way before going down 24-16 to ensure the League 1 title race involving the Bulls and York goes to the final round of the regular season.

In a series of tweets, Davies revealed the reasons for his sending off by referee Matt Rossleigh, implying that he felt hard done to.

He said: “Sent off for asking the ref how much he was getting paid.

“I wanted to know how much he was getting paid for reffing our game. I never mentioned Bradford paying anybody. He assumed thats who I meant. So I got red carded for an assumption (sic).

“I didnt call the ref a cheat though did I? I asked him how much he was being paid for the game. The words cheat never came out of my mouth. He assumed thats what i meant.

“Is me asking him how much he’s getting paid worthy of a red? He said it’s because I was insinuating that he was cheating and getting paid from Bradford. Those words never came out of my mouth, it was an assumption. You cant send someone off on an assumption!”

Davies will still be able to play for Oldham in their game against London Skolars this weekend, but could now face a ban that rules him out of the play-offs.
