Offiah to be guest of honour at RL Varsity Match

Martin Offiah MBE has been confirmed as the Guest of Honour for the 2015 Pcubed Rugby League Varsity Match between Oxford University and Cambridge University.

The former Widnes and Wigan winger replaces Shaun Edwards, who has coaching commitments to meet in rugby union.

Offiah was already pencilled in as Guest of Honour for 2016, but now fills the role a year earlier than anticipated.

Varsity Match Director, Mark Ramsdale said: “Naturally it’s a shame to lose a great speaker and sportsman like Shaun Edwards, but it is typical of Martin to move his schedule and join us a year early.

“It’s terrific for the event that such great speakers take the time to get involved and support rugby league in Oxbridge.”

Offiah was made an MBE in 1997 and later this year will be immortalised in a statue at Wembley Stadium – where he scored his famous 1994 90m try in the Challenge Cup Final.

He said: “I’m very happy to be able to be a part of the Varsity Match this year.

“I know how important it is for rugby league to be played at Oxbridge and this is one of the biggest Varsity events in the calendar.

“I have been looking forward to it since I was first asked to get involved and to do it sooner than later is terrific.”
