NRL confirm change to “Six Again” rule for 2022

The National Rugby League (NRL) have announced what rules will be changing ahead of the 2022 season.

The biggest change is to the “Six Again” rule. If the infringement occurs within 40 metres to a team’s try line, then a penalty will be given instead of a set restart.

Meanwhile, clubs will be required to name a 22-man squad this year instead of 21. This coincides with the 18th man rule the NRL brought in last year.

Another big change sees the possibility for further free interchanges. If a player has to come off as a result of foul play, and the offending player is given a card, the interchange will be free. However, this will not apply for “on report” offences.

Finally, only the referee, touch judge, or the bunker can stop play for an injury. Only when a head injury occurs, will a medical trainer be permitted to stop play. Trainers can still enter the field at any time to treat an injured player.
