Norway match a great success

The first representative Rugby League match to be played in Norway was deemed a great success as the Great Britain Student’s Presidents XIII, the Pioneers, triumphed 24-0 in Oslo.

A crowd over 100 braved the initial rain to witness a committed and athletic performance from the Scandinavians, who trailed 16-0 at half time after tries by Stevens, Donovan and Ellis and goals from Howard and Stevens.

The Norwegians were dominant for long spells in the second period as the sun came out but inexperience let them down at crucial moments and tries by Graham and Skinner sealed the win for the tourists.

Coach and founder of Norway RL, Warren Helig commented, “this is just the beginning of another great Viking era.”

“With more effort of this sort, we will conquer Rugby League!”

Rugby League European Federation Development Executive Kevin Rudd, who was at the game said, “The Norwegians showed great courage in what was a genuine contest.”

“Even the dreadful early rain could not put a dampener on the occasion which the initially curious crowd thoroughly enjoyed.”

“Congratulations need to go to Warren for organising a wonderful occasion. The Students and their management were great ambassadors for the game.”
