Oxford have signed hooker Wes Newton, a former London Broncos junior.

Newton played for Harlequins’ Under 20s side, making his debut against Hull in 2010, and has played for a number of local clubs, including Oxford Cavaliers.

He said: I am really excited to be joining Oxford RL, they have a great vision in making Rugby League big in Oxford and I am happy that I can be a part of that. The club is great and are doing all they can to be a success on and off the field which is fantastic.

“I am looking to try and give Tony Benson a few headaches in team selection by putting myself out there and improving all aspects of my game. Playing regular in the first team would be a great achievement for me and a challenge I look forward to facing.”

Newton also has representative honours with Yorkshire Under 19s, South England Students and the Great Britain Student Pioneers.

Coach Tony Benson said: “Wes is a local player, who trialled last year but was out of condition. He’s come back this year in shape and has shown that he has a lot of skill and experience. He has been with the Broncos Academy and I’m sure he will be dangerous this year.
