Newcastle Thunder have promoted academy half-back Alex Donaghy to the club’s first team.

A former England Youth representative, Donaghy is the first player to feature at all levels of Thunder’s academy before making the step up to first team action.

Thunder director of rugby Denis Betts said: “Alex is a product of our fantastic academy and is a player who has just so much ability and talent.

“He has never failed to impress when I have seen him play and he showed great composure when he made those first starts in the Challenge Cup, particularly in those testing conditions down at Keighley.

“He shows an understanding of rugby league far beyond his experience. We need to invest more time into him, but I am really excited by his prospects.”

Donaghy said: “I’m really excited for the season ahead, its been too long since a game and I’m itching to getting stuck into it and improve as a player even more.

“It was a good experience playing for the first team this year and being able to challenge myself against tough opposition. Its always a nerve racking for your first few games but I enjoyed the experiences.”
