Newcastle have signed Hull KR forward Owen Harrison and Wigan centre Sam Halsall on loan.

Harrison, 22, has played 14 games for Hull KR and has previously enjoyed a spell on loan at Dewsbury. He has signed a season-long loan deal with Newcastle.

Thunder director of rugby Denis Betts said: “Owen is someone who is going to be a great asset to us for the rest of the season. Has great Super League experience and is young but also has a bit of edge to him where he wants to try and get better.

“He has been in full time training at Hull KR so has that mentality and toughness about him, he is going to give us some extra punch and put us onto the front foot.  He is a big man with presence but is also a high-quality footballer with great hands.”

Halsall, 19, has made two first team appearances for Wigan since making his debut last season. He has signed an initial two-week loan deal with Thunder.

Betts said: “Sam is an exciting young player who will add to our training because of his background and his desire. He is a young player who our move to a hybrid environment, with additional training sessions can have the environment he wants and needs.

“He needs to play and is one of those highly talented kids who aren’t getting a chance to play through the depth of squads at Super League clubs. We’ve got an opportunity we can give him and add to the depth of our squad in that position.”
