France international full-back Morgan Escare has left Salford and is set for a return to his homeland.

Escare, 31, still had another year on his contract at the AJ Bell Stadium but the club has now confirmed his departure.

The Red Devils had been keen to free up his significant salary, and he spent time on loan at both Wakefield and Barrow in 2022.

The France international made his Super League debut in 2013, scoring 19 tries in 20 games, earning him a nomination for Super League’s Young Player of the Year.

He moved on to Wigan in 2017 and was part of their Grand Final winning team the following year.

After joining Salford as a replacement for Niall Evalds, Escare scored seven times in 14 appearances in 2021.

But he found chances hard to come by last season, making just six appearances for his parent club, and missed most of the latter part of the season with a broken thumb.

He did regain fitness in time to feature in the final game of the regular season for Salford, and then played in France’s World Cup matches against Greece and England.

Morgan Escare follows Jack Wells and Greg Burke out of the exit door, with both recently joining Barrow; Harvey Livett has signed for Huddersfield while Sam Luckley has gone to Hull KR.

No details of his next move have yet been made public, with Salford saying he has a new venture in France.

The French Elite Championship competition is ongoing, with several clubs having made signings from Super League in recent weeks.

Toulouse are also desperately looking for players for their squad after their return to the Championship for 2023.

They are thought to only have eight players on contract so far.
