Sheffield Eagles have announced the signing of Mike Weldon on a one-month trial.

The back-rower signed his first professional contract with St Helens in 2014 after coming through the academy, and will join the Championship side on a month trial.

Mark Aston’s side sit 10th in the Championship, with three wins in 14.

Weldon told the club’s official website: “I’ve been really excited to get started.

“I have been out of the game for a while and I had my first session back last week, since that I have been itching to get back into it.

“Sheffield have a few Saints boys, one of them being Matty Costello and he said something to Ged about me being a good player when he played with me at the (St Helens) Academy.

“Matt rang me up about coming down. I met Mark and Ged, and that ended up with me training and they said for me to come down for a few sessions in the future.

“All the Sheffield boys are really good lads so even if I hadn’t known the Saints there, I would have fitted in really well.

“They were all really welcoming and seem like a good set of lads. It was really easy to fit in.”
