McShane off to Wakefield

Wakefield have signed hooker Paul McShane from Leeds for an undisclosed fee.

McShane, 24, fills the void left by Papua New Guinea international Paul Aiton, who moved in the opposite direction earlier this month.

After that signing, McShane handed in a transfer request at Headingley, having made 63 appearances in eight seasons for the Rhinos.

He has also had loan spells in Super League with Widnes and Hull, who were then coached by current Wildcats boss Richard Agar.

McShane said: “I want to play as much as I can and get back to enjoying my rugby again. I’ve been in and out for the last two or three years when I’d have liked to have been more regular.

“It’s a fresh start. I’ve been at Leeds a long time – since I was 16 – so to have the change is for the best.”

The hooker becomes Wakefield’s fourth new signing for 2014, following the captures of Richard Moore, Dan Smith and Scott Anderson.

Agar said: “Paul’s a very talented player and very creative out of dummy half. He’s at that stage of his career now where he needs to be playing regularly and we think he can become a dominant and prominent player for us.”
