McGuire out of cup final

Leeds stand-off Danny McGuire has been ruled out of the Challenge Cup final against Warrington with a knee injury.

McGuire, 29, suffered the injury during Friday’s 68-24 win over Widnes, and faces up to two months on the sidelines.

Head Coach Brian McDermott said: “We are absolutely devastated for Danny that he will miss out on Wembley. This is the worst possible news that we could have received less than a fortnight before the Final and clearly we will have to have a major rethink about our tactics going into the game.

“I have spoken recently about Danny and the outstanding season he has had for us this year and he will be a big loss for the Final. The injury is not related to his previous reconstruction and it was an innocuous clash however the scans have revealed the extent and it will need up to eight weeks recovery time.”

The England international is the joint leading try scorer of all time in Super League, and is just seven games shy of 300 appearances for the Rhinos.
