McGuire inspired by Olympic schoolmate

Danny McGuire will be cheering on former schoolmate Nicola Adams, who will today go for an Olympic gold medal in boxing.

While McGuire and his team-mates are preparing for a Super League clash against Widnes on Friday, Adams could create history by claiming the first ever women’s Olympic boxing medal.

The pair went to Richmond Hill Primary and Agnes Stewart secondary school in the city.

McGuire said: “I remember when she first took up boxing, I think it was for a bit of fitness at first and was quite on unusual at the time, but it has been great to see her go on and pick up world titles and rise to the top of the sport.

“I think she has done fantastically well. I have watched both her fights so far and she has been head and shoulders the best fighter in both contests. I am really looking forward to watching the Final and hopefully she can bring the gold back to Leeds.

“I hadn’t seen her for a few years but I bumped into her a couple of months back at a dinner and was able to wish her all the best. I think it is a great achievement to get where she has already but I know she can finish the job off this afternoon.”

Success for Adams will be yet another Leeds success story in a week that has already seen the Brownlee brothers pick up gold and bronze in the men’s Triathlon.

McGuire added: “I have been glued to the television over the past fortnight and the British team have done us proud. It was great to see the Brownlee brothers do so well the other day, as they are Rhinos fans, and I think it is so good that young kids are being inspired to take part in sport.”
