McDonnell: We have to be at our best

St Helens winger Shannon McDonnell believes his team will have to give its best performance possible to knock off Warrington tomorrow night.

Saints travel to the Halliwell Jones Stadium on Thursday with a place in next weekend’s Super League grand final on the line.

McDonnell isn’t underestimating the challenge his side is facing away from home.

“Warrington are a well drilled team who have strong outside backs who carry the ball for good meters and a tough pack who can also ball play,” he admitted to Love Rugby League.

“On the back of the their two halves, who have had massive years, they are an all-round dangerous side and are League Leaders for a reason.”

St Helens may have finished fourth on the Super 8s table but the Red V has a fantastic record at the Halliwell Jones in the past.

But McDonnell, who has scored seven tries in 18 appearances in 2016, said Saints pass success at Warrington’s home ground will matter for little tomorrow.

“You have to be at your best at a ground like Warrington and it’s a place that Saints have had success at in the past but that all means nothing come Thursday kick off,” the Australian said.

“We have to turn up and execute what works for us.

“It’s cliche but it’s that simple.”
