McCormack pays tribute to Swinton fans

Steve McCormack has paid tribute to the Swinton fans following the superb atmosphere during the game against Halifax at Leigh Sports Village on Friday.

The Lions were just seconds away from claiming a draw against the Championship leaders before Luke Ambler‘s last minute try snatched a 24-18 victory for Karl Harrison’s men.

But the game, watched by a crowd of 822, was a fantastic advert for rugby league and Lions’ coach McCormack said: “The support was fantastic and that goes for the Halifax supporters as well. Friday night games for me really get the atmosphere going.

“It works two ways. We’ve got to play well to get the atmosphere going and the crowd have to get going to help us play well.

“But the fans were great and we just want more supporters, that’s the thing, this team deserves more support.

“What’s happened in the last 12 months with this team and the way it is developing they deserve a lot more support.

“They are giving absolutely everything for this club and showing a lot of quality.

“It’s a slow process but we are definitely improving.”

Halifax coach Harrison was certainly impressed by the quality in the Lions ranks.

He said: “Swinton surprised me. They are a very good side with some big units and a very good coach.

“They asked a lot of questions on our fringe and our fringe struggled to handle them to be honest and every time the ball went wide we seemed to panic.”

The Lions have no game this weekend and are next in action at York on June 10.
