Warrington recall Max Wood from second Hull FC loan ahead of bumper schedule

Max Wood’s second loan stint at Hull FC has been cut short, with the young forward recalled by parent club Warrington Wolves as they gear up for three games in ten days.

Front-rower Wood, who joined Warrington ahead of the 2024 campaign, has struggled to nail down a spot in Sam Burgess’ side this season.

Back in June, he played two games on loan for fellow Super League outfit Hull before being recalled to feature off the bench in Wire’s next three games.

He then returned to the MKM Stadium on another loan – with this one specified as being a month-long deal.

But three weeks into the four allotted, with the 22-year-old having played another three games for Hull, parent club Warrington have again recalled him.

The latest recall comes as the Wolves prepare to play three games in only ten days due to their Round 2 clash away against Hull KR being re-arranged for next Tuesday night (August 18).

That re-arrangement was required through reigning Super League champions KR being involved in the World Club Challenge and then reaching this year’s Challenge Cup final, doing so by beating Wire in the semi-finals.

Before that clash at Craven Park comes around though, Warrington host York Knights at the Halliwell Jones Stadium on Thursday night, and Wood will now be in contention for that clash having been recalled.

Wire boss Burgess has already made his frustrations around their ‘totally unacceptable’ schedule clear, and vowed to rotate his squad to help them through this period having already rested Luke Thomas and Josh Smith last time out against Bradford Bulls.

The Wolves beat the Bulls comfortably at Odsal, and now sit fourth on the Super League ladder ahead of their gruelling schedule as they face York (August 13), Hull KR (August 18) and Huddersfield Giants (August 23).

Including the five games he’s racked up across the two stints at Hull, Wood – who came through Wigan’s youth system but joined Warrington before playing a first-team game for the Warriors – now has 52 career appearances on his CV.

The prop has represented Midlands Hurricanes, Bradford, Widnes Vikings, London Broncos and Oldham on either loan or dual-registration as well as Hull.

His six tries in the professional game to date have been split between Wire (four), Widnes and Bradford (one apiece).
