Wakefield coach Mark Applegarth admitted the performance his side dished up in their 60-0 defeat at Wigan was ‘unacceptable’ and ’embarrassing’.

Trinity failed to score whilst conceding 11 tries against Wigan as they lost their second game of the Super League season.

And Applegarth made no excuses after the game, saying it was completely unacceptable by the standards they set in pre-season.

He said: “I thought in the first half our lack of bite in defence and Wigan’s clinicalness in how they punished us summed it up.

“It was 34-0 at half-time, it’s just unacceptable from us as a team. I thought it was a mixture of Wigan being outstanding and us not having that bite about us. We got rolled far too easily.

“Our defensive application was miles off and its something I will get to the bottom of. It’s just not acceptable for a team at this level; and one that I’m head coach of, so I’ll take full responsibility for that. We’ve got a lot of work to do, there’s no doubt about it.

“I don’t want to say something I’ll regret but its not something we want to be about at Wakefield Trinity this year at all.”

Applegarth says his side must improve ahead of Friday’s game against Huddersfield.

He said: “We will review it tomorrow morning and have some honest conversation with each other.

“I don’t want to take anything away fom Wigan, I thought they were outstanding. They definitely got the response they wanted and you could tell they were hurting after that Hull KR loss.

“First of all, lets congratulate them but from our point of view we’ve got a lot of work to do. It’s not acceptable for Wakefield Trinity, it’s embarrassing.”
