St Helens have confirmed that Tommy Makinson is likely to miss the rest of the 2016 season with an ACL injury.

Makinson was taken off injured during St Helens game with Widnes Vikings and was not named in the Saints’ 19-man squad to face Hull FC this weekend.

However, St Helens have now confirmed the extent of the injury to Makinson and head coach Keiron Cunningham says it is a big loss to his side.

“We’re all gutted for Tommy but he is one of the most professional players we have and will be dedicated to his rehab,” Cunningham said.

“We will miss his contribution to our side but this gives an opportunity for another player in the squad to come through and seize his chance. Our squad is experienced at dealing with long term injuries and we will look to it once more.

“In the meantime, we wish Tommy all the best.”
