Hi James,

I have been unfortunate to have not been watching rugby league long enough to see GB in its heyday. However, when I heard the GB team was returning I was nothing but disappointed. The game is devoid of superstars to represent the other home nations, so I was puzzled as to what benefit GB had over the England team except keeping the flatcappers happy.

We all know the results of the woeful tour, but it begs the question what next? Another tour is expected for 2023. Are we again to expect another England team in disguise or is the RFL hoping rugby league takes over the home nations?

That’s why I suggest the possibility of GB being an exhibition of the best U23 talent on offer? With the potential to follow a similar format to what is seen in the Olympic football squads which allows for the inclusion of a few senior players. As RL isn’t currently recognised by the Olympic committee I think this is step in the right direction and the potential to expand to the game to larger audiences if it does become recognised.

I also believe that the Lions were to go on a tour again against developing nations then the games will be more lot more entertaining and competitive while still maintaining the brand.

Thanks

Daniel Robinson

Editor’s comment: There is certainly lots of debate regarding Great Britain, and largely there is a desire to retain the brand. The Under 23s idea is an interesting one – perhaps this replacing England Knights would make more sense. Though I’m sure there are people who would argue if the first team can’t win games, then what hope do the Under 23s have!
