Mailbox: Our game is a shadow of the NRL

I’ve been an ardent RL fan for 75 years and I’ve also given up with English RL.

I can’t believe what has been allowed to happen with the play the ball. No attempt is made to bring the ball back into play by touching it with the foot. I thought that was written into the laws of the game. A complete farce.

Also I accept that scrums are a means of restarting play with room for the backs to display their skills. However, please let’s have only forwards allowed in the scrum and make them bind.

I’m now following Australian RL and enjoying the outstanding skill level of their athletes.

Our game is a shadow of theirs; no wonder support is dwindling away.

So sad.

Editor’s comment: The game in Australia is far superior to ours, though that’s not to say that the players that are produced in the UK can’t hold their own in the NRL. It’s a shame the top two leagues in the world can’t work closer together for the benefit of the sport – first and foremost, by playing with the same rules would help!

  1. Why are all Mailbox writers a cross between Senna the Soothsayer and Donald Trump?

Does no one positive write to Love RL?

75 years of moaning about stuff like the play the ball ….. Give over!

    • Doesn’t help that the editor’s comment is ‘The NRL is far superior…..’ It’s bad enough having the Aussies think their players are all superior to the English & expect every NRL player to completely dominate super league, coming from English fans or the press it’s embarrassing!

Are the games played differently? Yes, and if 5 drives, a wrestle and a kick is your thing then watch NRL* (or that boring Wigan team from a few years back.) If you prefer ball movement / expansive play / offloads / etc, then watch the superleague and accept that there will be a lot more errors.

*Although probably best watching games from previous years as the set restart over there has made a very noticeable difference in the way teams attack & defend which itself has increased the number of attacking errors (drop balls, poor pass, poor kick, etc) and defensive errors (missed tackles, poor/ineffective tackles, offsides, etc).

  2. Sky Sport have made a mistake cutting back the number of NRL games, they are so much more superior, faster, quicker play the ball, better referees, The Bunker is far better than our video referee! fans kept informed what is being looked at! and with our game this stupid rule when there is a knock on, how the clock is set like a drop out, players stand around, move to one side, until told to return in front of the play the ball player, then players look at the clock, you could not make it up! Perhaps Sky are upset that the NRL players are not getting down on their knees, and commentators all wearing the badge, and not putting the message above the score line?

  4. We will continue to see the demise of this great game and spectacle of ours while ever it is run by buffoons like Elstone and Rimmer if marketed right the money would increase and so the game would thrive.

  5. I do care….have never understood the obsession with Aussie RL….Don’t think there game is as great as it’s made out to be. Predictable yes, full of gimmicks yes but entertaining not often enough.
